Hand-hammered rivets and special finishes are the signature features of the B17 Special leather saddle.

Like all Brooks leather saddles, each B17 Special is handmade at the Brooks factory in Smethwick, England, and carefully finished with hand-hammered copper rivets, adding classic character and lasting beauty to durable vegetable-tanned leather.

Leather Care

The first key to properly maintaining your leather saddle is regular leather care. Brooks recommends applying Brooks Proofide leather dressing every 6 months.

Apply with a soft cloth.
Cover the entire upper leather surface with a thin layer of Proofide.
Leave it for at least one hour to allow it to penetrate the leather surface.
Use a clean, dry, and soft cloth to polish the leather firmly until all remaining Proofide is removed and a healthy shine is restored.

Proofide also helps soften the leather. If used too frequently, the leather may become too soft, so Brooks recommends using it only every 6 months.

Saddle Tension

Over time and with use, the leather on the saddle will naturally stretch and gradually lose tension. Without proper adjustment, the leather may begin to sag or deform, reducing comfort and shortening the saddle’s lifespan.

It is important to carefully inspect your saddle every 6 months for signs of leather stretching. Check from the side for any visible sagging, or press the rear of the saddle with your palm to see whether the leather flexes more than approximately 5–6 mm.

To adjust the saddle, use a torque wrench from the front of the saddle and turn the tension pin nut clockwise by 1/4 or 1/2 turn. Make sure that only the nut turns and the tension pin itself does not rotate.
