With the EVO R, we built the prototype frame in a different way, using a carbon fiber blend from Japan’s Toray. The outgoing EVO combined medium- to high-tensile-strength fibers, including T1000G, with our SLP strategic layup process. The EVO R uses an upgraded blend with T110G carbon fiber.
The result is a lighter 890 g frame and a more responsive ride. The Equipe EVO R is the official bike of the CHPT3 x Aquila Ka.dre cycling team. The CHPT3 x Aquila Ka.dre team is a collective of riders who are eager to contribute to a more modern culture around the sport of cycling.
Created in collaboration between Aquila Cycles, a well-known bicycle brand from Canada, and the KA.Dre team from British apparel brand CHPT3, the new aerodynamic road bike frame, the Aquila EQUIPE EVO R, is launched as a limited R version.
Compared with the current EQUIPE EVO, the R version features a number of specification upgrades and refinements. First, it uses TORAYCA’s unique high-tensile carbon fiber blend from Japan, making the entire frame lighter and more responsive when riding.
In addition, the EQUIPE EVO R has been specially redesigned around the head tube, fork, and seat stays to improve the frame’s aerodynamic efficiency. The top of the fork, as well as both sides where the seat stays meet the frame, have been widened by 0.5 mm, allowing air to pass through the fork and exit from the seat stays.
The design concept is to allow air to pass through the frame with minimal disruption, while helping the bike respond more predictably and aerodynamically in different wind conditions. A subtle wedge-shaped design on the front side of the head tube acts as a flow guide, helping direct air more smoothly across the horizontal plane of the frame.
The previous Equipe EVO already delivered outstanding performance and specifications, but the design team believed there was still room for aerodynamic improvement. By using professional CFD frame design software, the team was able to understand the aerodynamic limits of different frame shapes and continuously test tube profiles, gradually achieving an ideal balance between reduced weight and improved vertical compliance.
Fully hidden cable routing is widely recognized for improving riding performance and creating a cleaner overall appearance, while also enhancing the bike’s aerodynamic performance. The Equipe EVO R uses the FSA fully internal ACR system, routing all cables through the handlebar, stem, and headset into the head tube, then distributing them to the proper positions within the frame.
It is no longer a secret that wider tires have been proven to better unlock the performance of a quality tire compared with narrower ones. The era of narrow 23 mm tires and 120 psi pressure is over. Wider tires can be ridden at lower pressure, helping shorten the linear contact patch between the tire and the road, allowing the wheel to roll faster. Lower pressure also allows the tire shape to work more efficiently while rolling, improving grip, cornering performance, and comfort without increasing rolling resistance. The Equipe EVO supports tire widths up to 32 mm, making it one of the best performers in its class.
When designing the frame, we carefully considered the idea of pursuing aerodynamics at all costs. Many aero bikes use extremely aerodynamic seatposts to achieve maximum aerodynamic performance. However, the seatpost is one of the most important contact points between the rider and the bike, and it is also the area of the frame that bears the greatest vertical load. Shaping the seatpost for maximum aerodynamics requires more material to maintain structural integrity and, more importantly, increases stiffness in this area, which can reduce ride comfort. The Equipe EVO uses a D-shaped seatpost, combining aerodynamic and round tube profiles to find the best balance between light weight, aerodynamics, and comfort.
We chose to equip the Equipe EVO R with a flat mount hydraulic disc brake system. Although the use of disc brakes on road bikes remains a topic of discussion among many riders, we believe the advantages of disc brakes far outweigh the disadvantages. A high-speed road bike also needs to stop quickly and safely, and disc brakes have a clear advantage in this area.
